A building with history.
The Brunette sits on the historic Fort Harrison military loop, in Lawrence. This former military building, once home to companies of infantrymen, has been thoughtfully transformed into 34 ADA-compliant condominiums designed to promote accessibility, independence, and a strong sense of community.
How quickly it has become a community.
What has been most inspiring is how quickly the residents have bonded. Even in these early months, they have formed strong connections, built genuine friendships, and taken the lead in creating their own community traditions, including a monthly group dinner that they organize and enjoy together. The warmth and mutual support developing inside Brunette is exactly what we hoped this model would make possible.
Seeing these early successes has reaffirmed our belief in pioneering person-centered, forward-thinking housing options. Brunette is a powerful step forward for inclusive community living and a model that is already showing what this kind of environment can make possible.

Resident and Family Councils.
The Brunette has a quarterly Resident Council and a quarterly Family Council, the same structure shared across every Village of Merici community. You can read more about how the Councils work on the Our Housing Model page.
Technology in the home.
The Brunette is one of the communities where we are integrating individualized assistive technology directly into each home. Each unit is equipped with personalized devices, and our team provides assessments, setup, and training so residents can effectively use the technology that fits their needs.
Smart Home Consultations are conducted by our Occupational Therapist. Tech support follow-ups are handled by our Communication and Technology Support Coordinator. The Tech Lab at The Brunette is a hands-on space with smart displays, plugs, appliances, and health trackers. Visits to the Tech Lab can be scheduled through your Occupational Therapist or your Team Lead. In 2025 we presented this housing-and-technology model at the Indiana Affordable Housing Conference and the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference.
